    The British Film Institute library's series of topical bibliographies and reading lists (some of which are annotated). These bibliographies provide an introduction to the key critical texts for each topic. There is also a general "books about film" list and a list of directories for UK film, television, video, and media.
  • British Film Resource  
    The British Film Resource is an excellent starting point for those interested in British film history. Comprising a series of short essays, each section introduces a different time period, genre, or performer of particular importance to British film history.
  • British Pathe Limited  
    British Pathe Limited makes available 75 years of English newsreel footage. Users can join the site at no cost and download the films for private usage. The database's search function allows user to search by keyword, title, or theme. Very highly recommended.

    Get information about the history of moving image journalism in the UK. Search a database of stories and interviews with British news reporters, dating back to 1910.

  • Cahiers du Cinema  
    The main page of the website for the influential French film magazine cofounded by André Bazin is available in multiple languages. Back issues can be ordered and are indexed and searchable in the archive (only available in French) by issue number, date, title, author, interviewer, film, director, or production year.
  • California Newsreel  
    California Newsreel is the leading supplier of social justice documentaries with an emphasis on works that advance "racial justice and diversity, and the study of African American life and history as well as African culture and politics." In addition to the films that it sells and rents, this website also features a number of articles about the history of California Newsreel and the films it distributes.
  • Canadian Film Encyclopedia  
    An online reference project from the Film Reference Library, a leading educator and research and information resource for Canadian film. Currently, the Canadian Film Encyclopedia includes over 750 film title, biographical, and subject entries, covering some of Canada's foremost historical and modern films and filmmakers. The CFE also includes original writing from Canadian film critics, professionals, academics, and theorists as well as a bibliography section featuring key print and electronic resources on Canadian film.

    The Canadian Journal of Film Studies / Revue Canadienne d’études cinématographiques is an academic peer-reviewed film journal that is published bi-annually. It launched in 1990, and the complete archive is available online for PDF download.
  • Carl Theodor Dreyer  
    This website devoted to the Danish director features an extensive print bibliography, as well as scanned copies of original programs and other primary source material in Danish. The biographical information is well-written and cites reputable texts on the filmmaker. Curated by Nick Wrigley from Masters of Cinema.
  • Chaplin: A Life  
    A website on the life of Charlie Chaplin by Stephen Weissman, a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst. The site features a collection of 40 photo essays about the actor with pictures and videos, as well as a news and blog page.
  • Charles Urban  
    A site about the British motion picture technology pioneer, who created the early colorization technique Kinemacolor. Urban was particularly interested in making educational films. This is a well-researched site, with timelines, technological and biographical data, as well as information about Urban's contemporaries. Created by Luke McKernan, a British film historian.
  • Chicago Film Archives  
    A searchable list of what is available at the physical archive in Chicago.
  • Chicago Reader Brief Reviews  
    The Chicago Reader's searchable archive of brief movie reviews contains more than 10,000 capsule reviews by current and past critics, including Jonathan Rosenbaum and Dave Kehr. Some full-length reviews, dating from 1988, are also available on the site.

  • Chinese Film, Media, and Print Cultures Bibliography   Peer Reviewed
    A comprehensive bibliography of books and articles on the cinemas and media of China by the Modern Chinese Literature and Culture Resources Center. Most of these resources are in English, although some are in Chinese.
  • Chinese Movie Database  
    A multilingual search engine covering the entirety of Chinese film history. The website also features an assortment of film posters, the earliest of which date back to the 1970s.
