Online Archives of Non-Film Materials

  • Media History Digital Library  
    Providing online access to the histories of cinema, broadcasting, and recorded sound, the Media History Digital Library digitizes collections of classic media periodicals that belong in the public domain for full public access.
  • Mediascape  
    UCLA's journal of Cinema and Media Studies looks at various moving image cultures including film, television, and digital media. Full-text articles are available for all past issues.
  • Motion Picture Reprint Series (Center for Japanese Studies, University of Michigan)  
    The Motion Picture Reprint Series run by the Center for Japanese Studies at the University of Michigan reprints now out-of-print books on the history of Japanese cinema. These are available for download, and feature new introductions either by the author or another academic. This site also features reproductions of archival documents concerning the Japanese Pure Film Movement, and the film documentation produced by the United States government on the effects of the atomic bomb.
  • New York Times: Movies  
    A complete, searchable archive of New York Times film reviews. The search function links to an extensive database of profiles on individual films, filmmakers, and actors.
  • Prelinger Library   Peer Reviewed
    The official website for the physical collection of the Prelinger Library in San Francisco. The library contains "40,000 books, periodicals, printed ephemera and government documents," many of which pertain to television and media, and to industrial/educational film production.
  • Ray Carney  
    The official website of Ray Carney, a leading critic and scholar on American independent film and art film. The website has three sections with selections from Carney's lectures, interviews, and writing: the John Cassavetes Pages, the Independent Film Pages, and Film and Other Arts Pages.
  • Reverse Shot  
    Reverse Shot is a quarterly online film journal. Full-text reviews, interviews, and articles are fully archived and searchable.
  • Rhizome   Paid Subscription Required
    Hosted by the New Museum, Rhizome is an online community devoted to digital media and Internet art, with a frequently updated blog, online discussion boards, and extensive archives and galleries. The ArtBase subsection is available to members through a $5/year subscription.
  • Rouge  
    Rouge is an online film criticism and theory journal, founded in 2003, published in Australia, and featuring an international roster of contributors. Fully archived by issue.

    This site can help users locate relevant auction catalogs, as well as information about which institutions have copies.
  • Sight & Sound  
    The BFI's monthly journal of contemporary film criticism archives past issues with brief descriptions of features and reviews. Selected features are available from all issues since 1999.
  • Television History: The First 75 Years  
    This website provides a wealth of primary documentation on the history of television in the form of advertisements and newspaper clippings. Also features a photographic guide to television sets through the decades.

    Though Vertigo's online versions of its print articles are available to subscribers only, all articles are catalogued by issue and a searchable index. Most articles from the monthly online issues are available in full for free.
